I think the Governator did try, but frankly there's the question of whether he makes a better killer alien robot/action hero than he does a statesman.
California's especially challenged on immigration, and they're going to have to sit down, and figure out which country it is they're part of, anyway, and how they intend to go forward in the future, with some of their cities serving as enforcement havens, basically aiding and abetting but at the state level.
The law itself is pretty clear and straightforward on dealing with illegal immigration, but somehow California manages to pass the bill for its' negligence on to the other 49 states. Amazing, how that works, almost magical, at that.
I'd say that it'd be inappropriate as well as inaccurate to lay the blame for illegal immigration solely at Arnold's feet, for some share of it belongs to each and every business owner, home owner, and so forth that's shaved a little piece of the illegal immigrant wage savings for themselves. Moreover, there's more to life than cheap labor, and it's high time to get everybody to go 'back to school' on this issue, learn all that can be learned about the problem, and table workable solutions that will serve the purpose of preventing future illegal immigration, as well as treat people fairly and humanely who've found their way into our country.
The world has really changed in the last 30-40 years, doubling its' population, the global demand for revenue and resources is
staggering, and something can and should be said for trying to preserve our country from the various and sundry influences that would like nothing more than to bum-rush unsuspecting communities and have their way with the american public.
There is a difference between providing opportunities, and tolerating rampant opportunism. Reform is in order...
