First, the guy is already a criminal for being illegal. Second, he lied to the police, and risked your mother's "good" name in the process. He is probably going to be deported.

If he has been detained by Immigration, he should be given access to aa telephone to call you. Unfortunately, immigration generally won't give anyone information about anyone they have detained, supposedly to respect their privacy (!), except to their solicitor. However, you can try ringing detention centres to try and speak to him. The biggest is Harmondsworth: 0208 283 3850.
What happens next depends on whether he can make any further application, whether he has been charged with any criminal offence, and what country he is from.

If the person is in custody it is the best place to be, he will be treated with care and compassion, given access to top quality legal advice, fed, clothed and watered, in fact everything a UK citizen is not entitled to, above all, don't worry, as soon as the liberal minded parasites get on the band waggon, he will be released, housed and given money to live the good life plus compensation for being arrested in the first place. As long as you are sure that he is an illegal, don't forget, if he is a tax paying citizen he will get nothing.
