"Illegitimate children" and Undocumented- in 2007.?
My question is that: when you (if you do) write about "illegitimate children" do you mean absentee fathers as the issue, or, the lack of a piece of paper that says it is "official"?

OK I didn't know what "illegitimate children" are. So I searched it and it means that you can't inherit wealth from your father and that he has no legal responsibility to take care of you.
It is old and comes from back in the day when you couldn't prove who the father was. Naturally this situation happened often when the mother and father were not married to each other.
Bastards were not always illegitimate. They could inherit if their fathers claimed them as their children. Divorce was not easy in the old days and sometimes the parents could not marry even if they wanted to.
Children are not illegitimate today in the US and both parents have legal responsibility for taking care of their children whether they are married or not. As it should be.
BTW I think that when people here say illegitimate children they mean bastards. My parents didn't get married so I'm a real bastard! hehe! :)

To answer your question. If I ever write about illegitimate children you should assume that I mean a child produced by a union where the parents are not married.
That "piece of paper" or the lack thereof makes a huge difference... legally, morally and ethically. No amount of pretending can change the facts.

I do not personally complain about illegitimate children, but hopefully you are not lessening marriage with your comment of a piece of paper that can be stamped "void". Marriage is more than a document marked "official" it is a commitment between two souls and should not be taken lightly.

Illegitimate children are born outside of marriage. Sorry, that's what they are called in polite society. There are not so nice terms too. That one, however, is the polite term for a child born to unmarried parents or outside of the legal marriage.

I have to agree with the majority. Illegitimate children are born without the legal protection and status that marriage provides. With a marriage, paternity is established at birth as a point of law. Without marriage, paternity has to be established through testing. Inheritance is another issue as are visitation, health decisions and others. Legitimacy offers so much more to the child under the law.

I've always felt that raising a child with a single parent is not the best environment for a child. That's not to say that single parents don't make good parents. Many do their very very best...but their best can't make up for the absence of a father or mother. It's a "make-do" arrangement --- not illegal (nor should it be.some have no choice at all), but not in the best interests of the child.
Illegitimate means born outside of wedlock. It is what it is. Only your own positive and negative interpretations of the matter create positivity or negativity.
Clearly being born out of wedlock is not a negative to you. FIne, so be that.

An illegitmate child is one born out of wedlock. The divorce rates are different for every state too. A child that is raised in a home where the father is absent is referred to a child from a single parent household. When I say something about an illegitimate child I mean exactly the definition of the word. This does not belong in the immigration section.
I think people consider it more likely the child's birth was used to better the financial situation of the parent when the parent is illegal and the child doesn't socially keep up with the father. I saw a lot of that in comments about Elvira Arellano, her son's SS benefits for ADHD and the fact that no one ever heard anything about the father, at all.
