U.S. Bigotry Due to Lack of Travel?
According to the US State Department, only 20% of Americans have passports. (In contrast, 40% of Canadians hold passports).
I feel this quote is more relevant now than ever - do you agree?

I was in the travel industry for 32 years.and I agree with you - totally.
Too many people in our country don't ever get more than 100 miles from Podunk. They live in a small, little world surrounded by small, little people and think they are the kings of the universe.
They are totally clueless as to how the rest of the world lives.
It's a shame, really.
So many people have no idea about what people in another country do, what they eat, how they live, what their politics are. They are so out-of-touch with most of the world because they are so ignorant of it.
They have never seen a major museum, never seen a good ballet, never been to a show. They have never been to a major metropolitan city in the U.S. or anywhere in the world where millions of people from all races live together comfortably and normally - all the time. And, they are so afraid - of everything.
I brought my girlfriend fromo colombia but the relationship is not working the way we wanted?
I haven't traveled far and I'm not a racist sack of crap. So no, I think it's either a lack of brain cells or how one is raised.
Is this the REAL Motivation For Antis?
Absolutely that's a cause.
Students to Permanent Residency in canada?
No, today's bigotry is due to non assimilation and special rights. Until we have assimilation and equal rights there will be bigotry. Those that have traveled understand that our level of bigotry is nothing compared to many other modern countries.
Charming question, should get some interesting answers...
Lack of travel makes you a bigot? I guess that's an interesting theory I myself think bigotry is more likely a learned behavior and not how many times you have crossed the pond (or the border)...
There are so many people full of hatred here. What kind of people are those .?
Guess we just like our own country so much. Theres everything in Grand ol' America. Perfect beaches in florida, food in Maine, hiking in Appalachian and Rocky Mountains, and numerous great cities and landmarks to see. America, the beautiful.
I think you are just trying to play the race card. Please, don't.
I thought the 'immigration reform' bill failed because the majority of Americans...?
There will be bigotry until we all view each person as an individual.
Why don't people just come to the U.S. legally?
I think it has to do with not being exposed to other people and cultures whether here or abroad, and, to parents teaching hate. We are our children's greatest influence. WHen I hear racism, I wonder about one's parents.
I also think it is often due to economic problems. They have the close relationship with people that are sometimes less economically successful, and, lack of personal responsibility makes one blame anyone- except themselves- and, it is easy to point out whomever is "different" and blame them.
Will I be able to get a job moving out of state?
Bigotry stems from ignorance not lack of travel. I've met wealthy bigots who have traveled the world and it doesn't change a thing.
If you could tell illegal aliens anything, what would it be?
Yes.It also has to due with the lack of interest in other cultures, and the lack of respect for anyone else's point of view. For example, during the Cold War,everyone was hoping the USA would be the first one to "push the red button." Did anyone stop and think how the Russians felt ? NO.And even now with the Iraqi war,Does anyone care what the Iraqis want? NO.It even goes so far as the immigration issue. Most people think everyone is either Mexican or Spanish.
How come most legal and documented Immigrants have been Mexicans, Germans and Italians ?
of course some people's eyes are opend with travel but it is not the cuase of american's bigotry.
Have you ever traveled? I mean really traveled. I have been to over 38 countries lived in 9 diffrent countries. I see the same thing from well traveled people from other countries. they hate america and americans yet when asked they have never been to america.
Also I constantly run into americans while abraod who are well traveled and still bigots.
Part of the problem is ignorance. I dont mean stupid people I mean people not educated in areas. People watch entertainment tonight as a news source. they can name more celebs kids names than other countries leaders.
Also bigotry is taught and learned. could travel help some of this but isnt the main factor.
as a matter of fact I probably picked up some bigotry from travel. didnt feel one way or another about bulgarians before i went there after 2 visits there i can say i dislike most of them and find them very idiotic people as a whole.
What happen to the Europeans coming to this great country?
I have traveled and still travel allot. I do believe there is not one human on this earth does not have some form of Bigotry. Whether it is religion, race, beliefs or people. No one is Innocent.
I need a good job as i had done Bsl,L.L.B.?
I love that quote. Mind if I use it?
But I find the same is true of those living in Russia, China, and Africa. Their countries are too big and their travel is restricted. Since they don't get out of the country enough, they have very provincial national-centric views.
Will my husband and children be able to get US citizenship?
Yeah - compare the us to Canada. Of course more people there travel more for several reasons.
Its colder then crap. Who wouldn't want to go to CA or AZ during February if you lived in BC?
They get more vacation time on average then we do. So they have more time to travel. Many Americans do not have the time nor money to just travel to foreign countries.
The US has wonderful domestic travel opportunities that Canada just can't match. Yes Canada is beautiful but the US kicks tail.
what is your question, Mark Twain lived in a different time and place, post 911
I think your question is a bit flawed, Canada has a population of around 33,390,141 (https://www.cia.gov/library/publications... the US population is around 300,000,000. As you can see the US population is much larger than our great neighbor to the north. And people Canada is a very great country, very beautiful etc… but based on you percentage of only 20% of Americans having passports that still puts the number of Americans with passports at more than twice the population of Canada.
I live near Canada and go to Canada a lot, and have many Canadian friends that live on both sides of the boarder and I can tell you that bigotry as you put it, Xenophobia etc… is not just limited to Americans, I have meet a lot of Canadians unfortunately that fit that bill as well. As a matter of fact my travels abroad I have meet many people that fit the bigotry/ Xenophobia bill.
Cheers!
hey, if I was in Canada, I'd be trying to get out, too.
My chinese visa expires on the 9th sept, but my flight is on the 10th, what will happen?
I like the answer from Freedom Overdose. Now according to you, he's got the right answer for sure!
I love Mark Twain. I love to travel. And yes, I have been to Europe twice, traveled to Mexico, traveled to Canada, traveled to South America.
But to say that US is a) bigoted and it is as a result of b) not traveling out of the country is completely bogus, it is unproven and is simply an opinion. Opinions are like derrieres--everyone has one, but everyone doesn't necessarily want to see yours.
How can i get visa to pakistan?
So being against this invasion of our country makes us bigots? Racists? Talk about narrow mindedness.
Should all businesses supporting illegals be listed by the government on a public site?
Ever heard of the "best evidence rule"? Here is how it would apply here: the best evidence of how many (or how few) Americans travel internationally would be DIRECT statistics of international travel among US citizens. Instead, your source takes the percentage of the population with passports and asks the reader to make an inference as to actual travel. This is number-manipulation, one of the basic tricks of demagogy. The specific problems with this statistic are as follows:
1. It's a few years old -- and when it was collected, there were still a few countries that Americans could visit without a passport.
2. Many Americans are dual nationals who use other countries' passports to travel.
3. The statistic does not take into account all the people whose passports are expired. In other words, someone who visited 3 dozen countries, but has been confined to home for the past 20 years (by illness, for example) is unfairly excluded from the implied number of Americans who travel.
For all these reasons, your statistic on how many Americans hold US passports does not permit a reasonable inference as to how many Americans travel. Try again.
Additionally, there are different ways to travel. Americans do indeed travel abroad less frequently than their European counterparts, but when they do, they tend to take more interest in historical and cultural sights. European travelers, particularly young ones on their "gap year", tend more towards bar-hopping (with perhaps a token museum now and then) and beach vacations in little enclaves of fellow countrymen. I don't consider such travel habits particularly "cultured" or enlightened.
U.S. bigotry is due to lack of education and lack of culture. so they blame all others but themselves. Its very true. I am a canadian and appalled at the racism in the US. Racism is shaming the USA. I hear americans sew Canadian flags on their knapsacks and jackets as Americans have a bad reputation for racism and bigotry so they are beginning to be hated. Very sad. Americans need to clean up the bigots and open their minds and hearts. Very sad and frightening as well.
Why America is called the land of opportunities?
The sad part is, that even when American's do travel abroad, we are seen as the "ugly" American..I read this very interesting article which goes into detail, about how were are preceived around the world...Here are a couple of excerpts:
"Do you love to share your political views with the locals you meet while traveling? Do you think that people in other countries should do everything the American way? Does your voice tend to get as loud as the print on your Hawaiian shirt? If so, then you might be an "ugly American."
The concept of the ugly American has existed ever since an increasing number of ordinary, middle-class travelers began exploring the world over a half-century ago. Now, an organization called Business for Diplomatic Action, concerned by an apparent rise in what it calls "negative stereotypes about our collective personality," is hoping to clean up the image of Americans abroad. The group has published a set of guidelines for travelers, the World Citizens Guide, that suggests proper ways of behaving when visiting countries outside of the U.S.
Among its tips:
Be humble. In many countries, boasting is considered very rude. … Assume resentment as a default and play down your wealth, power and status.
Refrain from lecturing. Nobody likes a know-it-all, and nobody likes a whole nation of them.
Be quiet. A loud voice is often perceived as a bragging voice. Casual profanity is almost always considered unacceptable.
Dress for respect. Jeans, T-shirts and sneakers work for many of us much of the time, but there are people in other countries who believe such casualness is a sign of disrespect to them and their beliefs. "
I still believe that, no matter how well traveled you are, if you are a bigot at heart, you will never change...It is part of our culture to believe we are better than the rest of the world, and as a natural progression, many also succumb to there bigoted ideas about the world...
Requiremens in getting married in south korea?
But ... let me guess... you probably think bigotry against Americans by Canadians is O.K. because Canadians can do no wrong, right?
(Although I do agree with your point that ther are a lot of xenopobic racists here.)
