It's a little bit of a head spin (having said that the British embassy's website for Ireland is the most painless I've visited compared to the Australian and USA branches). You don't really need it because Britain and Ireland are under similar rules (both EU etc). Still it's good to have that extra safety when you travel. ^_^The British passport costs €185 (plus €6 to return passport by registered post you don't need to pay this if you're going to collect it).
You don't need to apply for citizenship/register because you qualify for descent. You just go straight to the passport and remember that all documents need to be originals.
