Demographic changes of enormous magnitude have altered the ethnic and racial
composition of large cities and metropolitan suburbs across the nation over the past
thirty years, especially in California. Many cities and suburbs that were once home to
large majorities of whites are now places where ethnic and racial minorities form the
majority. “Minority-majority” cities in California have emerged as a new frontier in
ethnic and race relations, where African Americans, Latinos, and other non-white
groups now fi nd themselves, many for the fi rst time, living together and struggling
to coexist. Although confl ict, tension, and misunderstanding characterize this new
racial frontier, historians and other scholars must look deeper to fi nd examples of cooperation
and collaboration in these new “cities of color.” This article considers three
cities in California—Compton, East Palo Alto, and Seaside—as examples of the historical
and contemporary forces that have shaped “minority-majority” cities and the
relations between African Americans and Latinos in particular.
In the past decade or so, the national and local print and
visual media have made much of African American-Latino confl ict
at many levels—in politics, in education, in gangs, and in other
youth violence. For example, in a recent article titled “Black versus
Brown,” Newsweek focused on the contentious political climate
in the City of Lynwood, a municipality located between downtown
Los Angeles and Long Beach that over the past forty years went
from a white- to a black- to a Latino-majority community. The article
opened with a focus on Leticia Vásquez, the current mayor of
Lynwood, who recalled the racially charged politics in 1997, when
the new Latino majority in the city was mobilizing to gain control
of the black-run city council. Vásquez remembered “people knocking
on the door saying we needed to get rid of black city-council

I'd be no more concerned that I am if someone flies an Italian or Polish or other nations flag. Personally, I don't care what someone does on their own property. It is called free speech and applies to citizens and legal residents of this country.

I wouldn't feel anything but respect for this person for adhering to his cultural and national heritage. I have a neighbor who is Jamaican and has the Jamaican flag outside of her home and listens to reggae all day long loudly. Then I also have on the other side, the neighbors from El Salvador, with their Salvadorian flag hanging out their window. I am Mexican, I have no flag but adhere to my heritage and my husband is African American. Our friends and owners of the local coffee shop are Cambodian, and the rest of our neighbors are White, African American, or Mexican. I love my neighborhood, I feel like I live in a world of no frontiers. My life is enriched by their cultures each day. I love it and I don't know where you are going with this but get over yourself.

How can people believe illegal workers help the economy?
I would feel pity for them and wonder where their loyalty stood. If they are so proud of their country of origin, why are they here in the U.S.? It doesn't make any sense to me at all. Flying another country's flag is like saying: "I'm loyal to the country that doesn't give a crap about me". Sad.

It's a free country. As a legal citizen, he has a right to do as he wants. However, in my neighborhood, there ARE several houses displaying Mexican flags. A neighbor up the street owns a big Rebel flag. Guess who was forced to remove theirs.

I would have no problem with that as long as he showed the proper respect for the American flag. People often display the flag of the country that their family came from . I worked for a German Co. here in the US they would display the German flag along with the American flag on special occasions and the flag of Germany is not the swastika.
