If someone came to the USA from Canada speaking French, and unwilling to learn how to speak/read/write English, how does that limit you in society as a whole...unable to read traffic sighs...unable to fill out a job application...
...and unable to function in society as an asset, instead of a liability.
You want to get ahead, then you got to play the game(whatever that is). If one comes to America thinking they can assimilate into society here without becoming part of it, then good luck.

Almost all of them. They don't get an education to better themselves so they never make much money. A majority don't even grad. from High School. If amnesty becomes law, heaven forbid, we will have million of of extremely poor on welfare because they can't support themselves and their numerous kids.
They will NEVER be an asset to this country because they are stick in this destitute situation. They are a liability on the tax payers.

Good for you! You apparently get it! When I visit another country, I try to speak their language and keep to their customs and laws. Sometimes I fail miserably and they get a good laugh at my expense but I found that giving out Hershey kisses to French Police did wonders for getting smiles and directions. It also worked with the locals who were always willing to help and loved the little "kiss of appreciation" for their patience. A couple of times, when I said things that were embarrasing or "bad" because of my lack of language skill, the Hershey Kiss kept my fat butt out of jail. The Hershey Kiss became my ambassador.
Unfortunately, I can't proudly give out Hershey Kisses anymore because Hershey moved its plant to Mexico. I won't support this treason! I'll have to find some other way to help spread good will.

I am an immigrant myself and live in Canada and I see so many who do not integrate. While I do agree that your own culture should be perserved and cherrished, it doesn't mean that the culture you live in now should be ignored.
I see so many immigrants literally refusing to change and adopt and it is hard for them to integrate, make friends outside their own community, basically, they live in a bubble. I know that it probably is harder for older folks, but what about the younger generations? I am assuming that if they moved to Canada or U.S., that they are in a searc of a better life.
It is hard for some people to evolve. The way things are going, Monorities will have more rights (religously speaking), then the christians living in the country.
Regardless whether you are religious or not, you always have to be politically correct towards these minorities or you might just start a war!!! What the hell is that??? I mean, do they worry about insulting me or being politically correct towards me?
I do have great respect for all cultures and religions, as long as they do not try to proove that they are in any way better then I am just because their beliefes are different.

Think about where they come from.If they make $30.00 a day here thats twice as much as they make there.Also,most of them squeeze 10-20 people in one house all making min. wage and they're in heaven.Americans don't live like that but the middle class might just have to soon adapt to that lifestyle.

Jessica4: I do know lots of immigrants (yes some of them are illegal), and 3/4 are college graduates with bachelor degrees. They come here and work crappy jobs outside of their field so they can earn a bit of money. So don't just make things up about people you don't know- it isn't nice.
I agree wholeheartedly that immigrants in this country should learn English- it's for their benefit and makes things simpler and safer for everyone. However, historically, it's never been the case that 1st generation immigrants become fluent in their adopted language.
On a side note: Americans are INFAMOUS in the rest of the world for going to other countries and not making an attempt to speak the local language.

It should keep them down....it should make life rough. But right now victimhood is in and the Christian english speaking anglos are the ones expected to cater to everyones whims and demands and tolerate whatever they choose to dish out and make life as easy and painless and less challenging as possible coz they're poor victims that demand our servitude.

A lot of them any more...illegal immigrants used to work very hard at assimilating into U.S. society. They were thankful for the better life that living in the U.S. provided. Now, they think that they deserve to have all the benefits without assimilating. The sad thing is that the U.S. is catering to them by making it easier and giving the illegals more and more benefits. It's ridiculous but I don't think anything is going to change anytime soon.

I am from Europe and came here to marry a US citizen. Before I did come out here I'd made sure I was able to speak and write English. I may make some grammar mistakes once in a while, but so do people that have gone to school here and were raised in the English language.
I think it's very important to be able to communicate and socialize.

Yeah. Same with my dad...came from Canada legally as a young adult...everyone seems to want the instant gratification of "I want it now, therefore, I WILL have it now, regardless of anyones laws and to hell with all those people who are waiting in line for ten years to get in, I'm more important than them."
